Plenty of good natural chemicals out there for sure just make sure you use one and the right amount. I use the liquid style myself
using just water as some feel is good enough I have never found to work

The only thing I can add to this conversation to those, beyond all logical reasoning, that still think they need chemicals, is to ask you to try just using water. Rinse your tank out real good (soap, water and a little highway movement will do the trick), keep the over head vent closed and fan off when flushing and just see if you still have a problem. If you do, try to locate exactly where the odor is coming into the rv, as there will be a seal or something amiss and you'll need to correct it.


And to Tinstar, if you think this post was over a long time ago, why are you still here?

While everyone is concerned about odors in their coach...do you care about the odors from your vent causing issues with your neighbors?

Chemicals in may cases are required, are necessary and do work very well
To each their own way of doing things
You like water then by all means use it.I think all natural chemicals are the way to go so I use them by choice
90% of the time my tank systems is perfect but like said take a 2/3 full tank and warm weather and stinky fumes will and do come out the roof vent.If u have the fan on input you can and will at one time or another get a wiff of unpleasant odours if not treated properly with a proper chemical.
as said to each their own. water works for some just not for me
forgot to mention another reason I use what I use is it breaks down the solids fast and therefore no worry of solids plugging up things

My opinion based on 40+ yrs of RVng and FT living in an RV is chemicals are like an anode rod for an Atwood Water Heater....not needed BUT pose no harm

I don't use either and based on my own personal experience don't need either.
Poop stinks.......that doesn't mean it needs to be odor controlled...just control the odor by the built in designs----vapor barriers

As far as breaking down solids....water is effective and if you 'hold' waste until tank s full then dump the weight/volume f liquids will carry any solids out---the WHOOSH effect.
Like a fast flowing river moves boulders same with a full 'holding tank' (not septic where breakdown is needed). High liquid to solids ratio....WHOOSH

I, and others, were only pointing out to the OP (and others, including you) that black tank chemicals (much like special rv toilet paper) is not necessary, nor required, and is only making your wallet lighter.

You have missed the whole point of this discussion. It's not about if chit stinks or not....of course it does. What we are talking about is how to keep that stink out of the rv. Black tank systems are designed to contain that stink "in" the tank and not in the rv. If the black tank system has good seals, no stink will escape. Of course if you hold open the toilet valve long enough the stink will come back up the pipe and into the bathroom.....ESPECIALLY if the overhead vent is open and the fan is on.

So...... if the system is working correctly, there is absolutely no reason to put any deodorizers in the tank as the stink will be already contained in the tank. Therefore, just using plain water is more than sufficient to keep the system operating correctly.
