RV vs Truck tires.

So its time for me to change my current tires even though id hate too. I currently am running GY 670's and had a blow out this weekend. Tires purchased in 2009 and only 20k on them. Tires look new but the wife insists on replacement after the scare the kids had this weekend. No problem i said but after visiting my local GY dealer i was crushed at the price i was quoted for all 6 tires. The current asking price out the door was $3,700. I paid $800 less when i installed these in 09. Has inflation taken that big of a jump? So i naturally started looking around and seen all kind of post from people using truck tires on their rigs so it made me curious. So i started shopping arround today and i received quotes from different truck tire shops and they were significantly cheaper than the GY. I guess my question is is it worth going for the cheaper tire and risking issues down the road or bite the bullet and spend the $3,700?
I was quoted H rated Sumitomos for $2,100 any thought on these? i also looked at hankooks as ive seen them mentioned in the forum but did not receive a price on them yet.
  • I have ordered samson 19.5 tires on ebay twice through Chicago tire. Dates have been within 4-6 months.

They are a large established commercial tire dealer in Chicago area. One year on tires so far no problem. They are asking $229.00 per tire delivered I would offer about $210.00 per if ordering all 6 they will either accept or counter offer. Assuming 6 tires ten your at about $1300.00 assuming $30.00 per tire mount and install you are all in for about $1600.00

Shipping usually takes less than one week.
  • I bought 6 new LEAO 14 ply truck tires for my m/h 2 years ago. I discovered they were made in China but the company had been making tires for a Europen market for many years. Generally their market is Big Rig tires.

I'm extremely happy with them. No problems. Got all 6 for $1800.00 out the door.

I know 19.5 but what size and have you shopped online for them?

Sorry 245/70 19.5 I have shopped online but wasnt sure if purchased on line what kind of date you would get on the tires. Id hate to buy them online only to find they have been sitting in a W/H for a year.

    What do you think?

Looked at any tire posts on here lately? There are thousands.

Its not an easy call as I've seen so many post my head is spinning. I would have never even considered truck tires till I saw the posts on this forum. Saving $1,700 is big and virtually I could almost replace Sumis or any others twice for the cost of Michis or GY. My struggle is most of these posts mention 22.5 tires and i currently have 19.5's. Decisions,Decisions!
  • You are paying a "premium" price for the name Goodyear RV OR Michelin RV on the tire and they are a POS to boot. I installed Hankook AH-12 in size 270/70R22.5 4 years ago on the steer tires and last fall I replaced the rear. The price last year, out the door was $400/ea and I could not be happier with them.

Some people evidently think just because it has the name Goodyear or Michelin it makes them a better RV tire, but just do research on RV tire failures and see who leads the pack for failures ...... Yep, Goodyear and Michelin. Both make an excellent truck tire, but charge a premium for them, while there are MANY companies that have a stellar reputation with the trucking industry for hundreds of $$$ less.
