I am certain that the driver of the motorhome is going over and over what decision he could have made to have avoided his part in this tragedy. I am also certain that the family, friends and colleagues of the young officer who died are all thinking that this accident ought to have been preventable...
These sorts of threads can be useful if they provide some insight in accident prevention...
Unfortunately this thread has really stopped being constructive.
According to the police press release the officer had stopped his unit in the second lane next to the emergency service vehicle who had stopped in the first lane... Both units had their lights flashing... The officer and the emergency service worker were standing near the drivers door of the emergency service vehicle.. The emergency service worker saw the motorhome and yelled a warning and managed to get clear before the motorhome passed between the police unit and the emergency service vehicle which it sideswiped.. The police officer was unable to get clear. In looking at the pictures there were no skid marks and the motorhome came to a stop just as the trailer it was towing cleared the emergency vehicle. This was a very low speed accident.
I was on that section of 65 two weeks ago..its a heavy merge congested area.
I am sure one can conjuncture up ways this could have been prevented.
Please keep your speculation consistent with the circumstance of this accident... Some of the arguments are not consistent with what is known...and are not at all helpful.
