Unfortunately this is all true. It is very polluted, surrounded by some of the poorest forgotten people, crime rampant shanty towns and just a disgusting place overall. We visit the desert a few times a year to camp and ride dirtbikes but will never go to the Salton Sea again.
The New River is a health hazard, it is a foamy disgusting cesspool and one of a few things I wish we could stop flowing north.
