I'm happy to say, I've received my quote back from SAN DIEGO DUAL GLAZE.

WOW...

JUST WOW...

Should have been my first call (to them)!
Not only did Bob come out and measure, discuss, and explain my windows and give me ideas on new panes, and removing the existing panes... but, they got me a quote that was WAY BELOW what I ever thought possible. Let's just say... 6 window sections, in dual pane AND in smoked glass... for UNDER $500!

My jaw is sitting on the floor... so, let me pick it up, to continue typing.

I had "Craig", from the Riverside based glass company quote me $1200 to repair my window panes. His quote did NOT include any new glass, as two or three panes are in need of replacing (I think). I even offered him the work to install my new front windshields while he was onsite. Still, the price only went down $50, as he said the rear crank out windows are "just as hard" to do.

Well... I'll be pulling my own glass (after a wedding on 10/5 - as we're using the RV as a changing room). And taking it all into SD Dual Glaze for replacement. With his ideas on removing the glass (on 2 of the windows), it should be a slam dunk. 7-10 day turn-a-round, and I'm back in business with a 2yr warranty.

... of course, I'll update the thread with my results. And take pictures of the process for those considering doing the same. My thoughts of "it can't be THAT hard" were correct (per Bob of SD Dual Glaze). We shall see!

Hi Johnny, I'm following this thread so would appreciate it once you get the information from Dual Glaze, would you please update this thread so we can see what is available... I also have a couple of windows that are fogging and need to be replaced.
Single pane glass would work for me...

Well Sir, all I can say is I'm sorry you had that experience with them. It was a bit of work but, I've seen those boys do a lot of hard jobs and all of them came out nice. But, I guess things have changed. They must be getting lazy. Oh well, the good part is, you found another source for the repair. I'm very interested in the outcome of your repair. In our '04 Itasca Horizon 36GD, the rear left bedroom window has a fogged section in it so, I might just have to give them a call since that company's only about 25 minutes from us. Again, sorry for your troubles and hope things come out well. Good luck.

Sadly... Karl's will no longer do as you had done.
I hadn't heard from them after they said I'd get a call from an "estimator", so I called them. Within 15 minutes, they said "we aren't interested" and almost hung up. I said that you had HIGHLY recommended them and they had done your RV. Mentioned your RV, where your from, etc and then he said; "let me find out about this, and call you back". I got a call back 10min later, and they again... said; "we remember his windows, and it was a pain. We aren't interested in doing it again... It's too much work, to properly space the window and too costly" So, sadly... they won't do as you have had done.

They did recommend San-Diego Dual Glaze (in El Cajon). I'm trying them now;

I've briefly spoken with them, and they said they can do it all (reseal dual pane, replace dual pane, replace moldings, etc). So I have another "estimator" appointment to have them come out and give me a professional opinion. My idea, is I'll remove the windows and take them to them. We'll see, and I'll update when I know more.

I've known these folks for over 25 years and they're very good at their job. In our last coach, a '99 Fleetwood Bounder 34V, we had both drivers and passengers, stationary and sliders (one each per window) go bad on us. I stepped outside the box with my resolution. I had Karls build me two, complete windows, sliders and stationary, out of single pane, 3/8" thick, laminated, tinted, glass. The windows looked, acted and felt just like dual pane units.

They cut the laminated glass, curved it around the corners, and put it into the stock frame(s). They then installed the correct seals and rubber extrusions on and in the perimeters and installed new felts for sealing the slider and stationary when in the partial open position.

Now, I had all kinds of comments on how the windows would now sweat, get seriously cold inside the coach, overly hot in the summer, and bla, bla, bla, bla. NONE of that ever happened. The coach was just as quiet as it always was, there was NEVER ANY SWEATING, it did not get any colder inside the coach even when we were in snow type conditions and, we've camped in times and places when the A/C was needed 24/7 and the inside of the coach was nice.

So, that's an idea for you to think about too. Just a couple of options for you.

I just got back to this thread and found your comments. First, It was done about 4 years ago, plus or minus. Second, I removed the entire framed window(s) and took them down to Karls. I watched as they took apart the whole system, the stationary and slider, in each frame. Then, they had several selections of thick, around 3/8" thick or so, of different color (tinted) laminated glass. Gary, the tech there, and I both agreed on the one that was closest to the old tint that was the original glass. He then just started his work of cutting, cornering, grinding, fitting etc. of the new ones to the original frame.

If I recall, he did the stationary first, fitted it in place, then, built the slider for each window since they're both identical. Now, in the end, if I recall, the price was around $400.00 for two windows. Now, keep in mind that, each window did have a slider and stationary and, the size of each window, is around 2'x4' long so, that's a fair amount of glass, especially in the thick, TINTED, Laminated stuff. And, it was quite a bit of work. But, in the end, it worked flawlessly. The sliders slid just as nice as the dual panes that were originally in there.

And again, I had ABSOLUTELY NONE of the proclaimed problems that were supposed to happen. Our daughter and son-in-law now have the coach and we've been camping with them several times and those newly designed windows are still working just fine. AND, THERE'S NEVER, EVER, ANY THREAT OF FOGGING AGAIN!!

Any hot rod shop worth it's salt will be able to get you the info you need. When I was building cars, we had to have the windows custom made...check with some of your local builders...good luck...Dennis

Thanks Fred... but, I did already hit up quite a few "glass" places. I already have had experience with some, due to my large saltwater coral/fish tanks. Yet, it's mostly a "NO" we don't do that kind of work when asked of them.

A very good reply... and one that is VERY helpful.

I've been kicking around SINGLE PANE for a long time. Often wondering if dual pane is worth all the effort and hassles it causes. Being you know our environment, and how it can get cold and hot in these parts... yet, it seems we are always (us West Coasters) the oddballs when it comes to extreme conditions. So, knowing what you've experienced with your windows... really helps me think again about going to single pane.

For Karls... Did you take out the full window frame and take it to them? Or... how did they work your windows? Very interested in your process, how long it took, etc.etc. Also, how long ago was this you had it done (wondering if they still offer such a service)? ... I'll wait to call them, until I hear back from you.

Again, thanks a BUNCH for the info on what you had done.

BTW, my coach is a '99 Winnebago Chieftain 34Y. Very similar in size and window layout.

Well Sir, while it might seem to be an "easy" project, there's a bit more to it than just pasting two pieces of glass together with a sealed spacer in between them. About 99.99% of the dual pane windows built are done in a "clean room" with vacuum units, specific wash procedures, evacuators etc. for the finally assembly. You see, there's moisture in the air we breath and, ALL of that moisture must be removed to ensure there is none trapped inside the new assembly.

I'm not doubting any of what you're saying. It's just that, the building of such systems is not normally ever done by any individuals in an "at home" situation. Now, with all that being said, if you'd really like to take on this project, get a hold of "Karls Glass" on Federal Blvd, San Diego.
