seeking opinion from wise ones in Class A

Our first Class A...Looking at a 1999 American Eagle.. 97000 miles.. New tires, been serviced and has service records from owner... asking $54,000.
Any big issues we should look for?

Other "older" brands we like are Country Coach.

Since we are just getting our feet wet in the Class A world, any words of advice would be welcome.

  • Remember the prices you see on rv trader are asking prices. NADA guides low retail less 10 to 20% should be your target on a private party sale. That old of a unit the dealers are not going to give any sort of worthwhile warranty so your best bet is usually a private party unless you want to roll the dice on a repo. Maintenance is the most important aspect to consider.
I may be partial but I think you could get a good Monaco Dynasty 2000 or 2001 in the $50K range and have a Roadmaster chassis.
  • RV Trader lists several 1999 American Eagle Coaches and they range from $59,000 to $79,000 so I would think the price is good as long as everything else checks out.

Since I have a 1999 coach, I believe the old coaches that are cared for are certainly a good value. Check out all the systems and if they are good, I think you should consider the coach.

The only other thing that is important is that it should at least have one slide. A slide makes a great deal of difference and I would think that vintage coach has one. It sounds like you might give it serious consideration.........Arnold
  • That is a top of the line coach and when looking at older units those are the ones to look at.....I have one of the most expensive you could get in 1997 and I now have about 97,000mi on it and can tell you that is a right on price for that unit. There was one for sale here same year, one owner, kept inside, looked like new and it sold pretty quick for twice that much......and if I were in the market thats what I would be looking for. I may be a cave man but I have yet to stand by the road in the rain because a slid out failed---of course I don't live in it either.
  • not sure I'm a "wise one" unless you're referring to "wise-ass", but...

Any diesel pusher is good, better than the alternative.

American Eagle and country coach are top brands.

At near 15 years old, not sure how much that matters. Any brand that has held up that long is probably a good buy. $54k seems a ton of coin for something that old, but I could be all wet there.

Slides are good. '99 is when slides were first starting to happen.Does this coach have slides? While many would say slides are just another thing to go wrong, I would say that attitude is what kept cavemen in caves.

Our 08 has 4 slides. Open her up, she's 450 square feet, you don't even know you're in something that moves....
And I just don't worry about them. They work. And if they ever don't, i'll fix them.
