I helped my father and mother-in law do this a few short years ago. They had a huge house and moved into a small-ish beach house. They sold what they could, gave away what they could and then started throwing out. It was fairly easy for my mother-in law. It seemed pretty hard for my father-in law. But, now several years later they would say they haven't missed anything they got rid of, not even the 5/8 grand piano. They have really had a great time living at the beach and none of it would have been possible without shedding about 90% of what they previously owned. Life is too short to let stuff keep you from living it. Now, they work to live light and not acquire any extra stuff. For holidays they like gift cards for restaurants and movies..
