Shopping for a Class A Diesel

I've been lurking here for some time. We've been camping in our little inherited 1999 Roadtrek and we've finally saved up enough pennies to buy a good used Class A diesel. Searching online, there a zillion of them out there all over the country. I'm overwhelmed.

I don't want to break any rules, but if anyone knows of a broker to whom I could give my search parameters I'd appreciate a PM. If you've got any suggestions I'm all ears. Or... eyes.

Mods: If I've broken a rule here I apologize in advance. Please feel free to delete this post - I won't be insulted.

If you guys know of used Newells or Foretravels 2008 or newer for $175k, show me where. You aren't getting close to that number unless you go at least 2004 or older.

OP, you will see that a lot on here, posters ignoring your spelled out criteria to try and talk you into something else, usually what they own. You can find a lot of 2008's or newer in your price range. As others have stated, Newmar is a good stock to look at.

When searching on sites like RVT etc, put something in the minimum price point. If you don't put a number you get a bunch of them marked "too low to show". It generates a lot of noise in the search.

Enjoy the search, it may take a while. Pick a floorplan and go from there. Floorplan is your most important criteria. And consider plans with the slides closed so you can imagine what it's like travelling. Once you narrow down floorplans it will be easier to start comparing models and brands. Make a spreadsheet of the models, costs, likes, dislikes, that can really help narrow down.
  • I would second the Newell or Foretravel. I would also go back a few more years. Prior to 06 they had less pollution controlled stuff on them and that relieves you of some of the common issues that crop up. 60 k is an arbitrary number on a well built diesel.
  • Continuously monitor PPL Consignment in Houston's web site. You can get a good idea of differnt motorhomes and prices. It also gives the floorplan of all of them.
  • FWIW - also look at the construction details!! The 'skin' inside and outside is what you see, but the chassis and coach framework will determine the 'real' substance of the coach. I searched and decided that a welded steel coach framework was what I wanted - and that is what I purchased. (OK, it's a bit older, but it has all of the basic requirements we need.) Ask about how the coach is built and what it is made of - you may be surprised by a few of the answers!!

I do not have your budget, but if I did, I would be looking at the best Newell or Foretravel I could find.
    JMHO.
  • I plugged in your parameters into rvtrader.com, and came up with 252 results. Personally I would narrow to Newmar, which leaves you with 13 units to choose from. A much simpler set :)
  • Well, here goes. 40 to 43 feet. 400HP to 450HP Cummins. 1-1/2 baths. King size bed. 3 or 4 slides. No older than 2008. No more than 60,000 miles. I can spend up to $175,000.

The problem is you can't search any of these sites using these search terms. When I search I get *everything*!

  • You need to give us an idea of what you want. If you have a $10K, you'll be spending a lot of time looking for something that isn't falling apart. If you have a $150K budget, there are many out there.

You have DeMartini in Grass Valley, that has several DP's on their website. Let us know what you want....we have friends that say their ready to sell their DP...give us an idea.

My Newmar dealer is just down the street and he always has some nice used DP's for sale, including my trade in that sold in 6 days. I'll look to see what he has if you give a budget and some floorplan ideas.
  • You're in Menifee....jump on a plane and cruise Main St. in Mesa Arizona. There you will find at least 5000 motorhomes to look at. (Not an exaggeration). I second the starting place is PPL in Houston. They post ALL available rigs WITH pictures AND FLOORPLANS. If you look closely at their site, you'll also find their SOLDs, which will help you formulate an offer when you find the coach of your choice. I'm serious about Mesa though..tons of coaches there, lots of repos too....Dennis
  • I would go online to pplmotorhomes and look at their diesel selections. Listed with prices and lots of pictures. Very trustworthy place but all consignment.
