We just did a 5 week trip from Canada to Arizona, Utah and Idaho, total 5500 miles (9000 km) Costs for gas and campsite only averaged less than $80.00 a day. We did camp at 2 Wal Marts, 1 Church parking lot and a few disbursed camp sites for free. I didn't calculate food, but we ate in restaurants rarely, no more often than a typical month at home, so it is about the same. Propane? Not sure, but not much.
This is in a 23 foot Class C on a Chev 3500 chassis, 6.0 V8 and 4 speed transmission. We don't use hook ups often so we traveled with full fresh water, golf clubs, bikes, BBQ, lawnchairs, etc - not exactly travelling light but we had everything we wanted with us.
Remember that no matter what you drive, it will cost gas, maintenance and depreciation, and flying isn't cheap either, so we are satisfied that we had a fantastic trip for a total of $2500 (gas and camp sites)- hard to beat that. The added benefits of eating healthier compared to restaurants, a super comfy bed, a shower wherever and whenever we wanted and total flexibility make it very cost effective.
