Short?

96 Damon Intruder 30 amp. I’m not at the campground today, but they called and said my RV had a short in it and was effecting another pedestal. They unplugged my RV. Said it was probably power cord. Never heard of this before. Bought a new power Cord today and will go to campground tomorrow and try. Any thoughts?

They called you and said it was affecting another pedistal, not the entire park so its very beleavable. They may have saved you coach from fire if you actually have a short. Losing a nuetral can do some strainge things. Maybe you will need a thank you card instead of a Lawyer. Give us an update when you find out.

Loosing a neutral will NOT do strange things to a 30 amp system. Loosing a neutral will just shut the system down

  • the possibilities run more in the parks direction

    but
i would check on the batteries and converter/inverter-charger
a problem there might create a voltage issue with out tripping the circuit breaker on the pedestal

If the problem went away when they unplugged your RV, something IS going on
whether its the pedestal or your RV
  • Take a 30/15 adapter and a 3-light outlet tester with you to check ground and polarity. Bring a voltmeter to check voltage. Ohm meter will check the cord.

    Still the story sounds fishy.
  • I agree with almost everything said here but perhaps before you hire an electrician to check it out, perhaps you should talk to the owners of the campground and check the outlet on the pedestal with a meter.

You didn't say, if you know, in what way your rig was effecting another pedestal. If you could post that here, we could give a better evaluation of what is happening.

You should at least test your power cord and transfer switch, maybe plug the power cord in the pedestal and see what happens. The odds seem to be in your favor but hiring someone to check out your RV and "their pedestal" without their permission is something you can do but expect to be responsible for the cost.

If their power pedastal is wired correctly a short in your rig would trip your site breaker. And not affect the other site

Ditto. BUT.. That said there are things that can happen. Frankly however I do not believe the issue is with yoru RV at this point.

    IF there is any question.

1: inspect both ends of your shore cord AND the inlet it connects to on the RV If nothing jumps out at you.. Seek professional advice. IF NOTHING wrong. Bill the park.
  • What a crock! Yes, the problem is almost certainly with the Park's pedestal or system. Not only that but they opened themselves up to liability when they unplugged your RV. What if you had a pet inside depending on the temperature control, or a refrigerator full of perishables...... hope youncan take that un-needed power cord back!
  • I'm with BB. If you have several electric heaters plugged in, it would possibly reduce the voltage to an adjoining pedestal, but that would be a Park problem, not yours.

assuming their pedestal is wired according to code and that's an assumption I wouldn't make.
