Shower valve question

I replaced my hand held shower head and noticed the shower valve D neck outlet had a very small opening. While at Camping world I noticed new valves also had a restrictor in the outlet. Other than flow restriction is it necessary for proper operation, or can I drill a larger opening to increase flow?

On my sticks and bricks I drilled or removed (forget which, possibly both) on my RV not yet an issue, but if you drill BE VERY CAREFUL.

My rig came with a hand held (Telphone type) shower head, the outlet on the mixing valve is also a vacuum breaker, if you drill it out too large it will be seriously damaged.

These two responses turned out to be the best. After drilling my recommendation DO NOT DO IT. I will be replacing my shut off valve.

Most of the restrictors can just be removed. However. More flow will cause you to use the hot water faster, and so run out faster. Ask me how I know. Yeah I did.

Yes same here. After I enlarged the restrictor hole I could hardly finish a navy type shower before running out of hot water.
  • Like everybody else says "DRILL". :) What kind of good shower has a restrictor anyway?
  • I've even drilled some of the tiny holes in the head itself and got a much better flow.
  • Thanks for the replies. Since my new shower head has built in restriction I will open up the valve outlet a little more.

  • when I worked in RV sales this question came up more than once. many drilled holes and I sold a lot of replacements.
