Mice love to get into the vent system of vehicles and chew up insulation and plastic, and especially wiring.
Pack rats bring all sorts of leaves and trash into their nests, which are often in the vent system and nearby. They also love to chew wiring.
There is a large resistor in the AC system that is often times located around the heater box, inside it, or near the vent system. If a rat packs dry leaves, etc into the area where the resistor is, when it gets hot, it can light the leaves and dry stuff on fire, potentially burning down the vehicle.
