I spray mine with a liquid slide lube. I think it's a silicone - it's not dry.
After a dozen years of lubing it I haven't got any acumulation of dirt. In fact, when I drive in dusty conditions I just spray the rack off again.
If I don't lube it for a while I can tell a difference in how it moves once I finally do oil it. Much smoother and faster.
