If your manual says to use the slide locks I would agree with the manual. If you do not want to pay $40 for them the cheap and easy fix would be 2x4 lumber with a patch of velcro stuck to it. A little velcro to the top or side of the slide and the 2x4 will stay in place while bouncing down the road.
OR even a 1 1/2" round closet pole with rubber caps on each end
Measure 3 times--cut once allowing for thickness of caps.
Should be slightly longer so seal is compressed when wedged into place
