Slide-out locks?

We bought a new Rockwood Roo 23SS and are prepping for the maiden voyage in a couple weeks. It has a slide-out on one side.

A couple weeks ago I had to take it in for some warranty plumbing work, so I turtled it up, put the slide-out locks gently into place, and towed in the 26 miles to the dealer for repairs.

After I got it back home, I continued my system checks and before retracting the slide-out one time, I did my normal visual check on the roof of the slide. (I am paranoid about damaging the slide seal)

I found a 3-4" wrinkle in the seal that ties the roof to the outboard wall of the slide. When I went to the other end of the slide, I found a similar wrinkle. As I look it over, I am thinking they are in the same places as the slide-out locks set when they are set in place.

I really don't want a slide seal problem. So, is it crazy to consider not using the slide locks when towing the trailer?

  • There is a cleaner you need to use before eternabond is placed so it will bond, get at sme place as the eternabond. Do not accept other brands, NOT. The same.
  • The stickers are still there...you just have to R E A D them.

I bought an Eternabond kit and will make nice pretty patches to put on after I trim out the wrinkled part of the original seal.

Just paying the stupid tax on this one!

OK, pictures help. What I see has nothing to do with the slide locks that you use inside.
It looks to be separating Eternabond Tape.
    Solution:
    • Dicor Self Leveling Sealant or
    • A new strip of Eternabond Tape over the top of the wrinkles.

Well, I think the mystery is solved. When I put the slide locks in place I didn't position them up above on the wall, I let them rest on top of the slide roof. The subtle side to side movement going down the road with the bottom edge of the slide lock resting on the roof seam apparently caused the wrinkle. My bad.

Now, I feel like I have to do something about it and I am leaning toward a small Eternabond patch over the wrinkle. I think that would be the most flat I could make it?

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

Yikes! our 23SS had stickers on the wall, above the slide, showing where to place the locks. did they stop putting them up there?

i'd go with the Eternabond solution.

  • If you don't use the locks you MAY INDEED have a seal problem. Their purpose is to keep pressure on the seals while traveling, which prevents water intrusion during rain storms. I've never seen a slide room OPEN without the locks but few will seal all that tightly without them. FR does not use a transmission i the slide system making them especially prone to backing off a quarter of an inch or so.
    Good luck / Skip

  • Yes, I posted it before, but only got one response to my question. So I thought I would try over here.

I tried to smooth out the wrinkled up material and flatten the seam out a little. Glue from underneath is now on top of the seal, which is attracting all the debris. I also measured the location of the marks, and they line up perfectly with the slide locks.

  • i only use my slide locks on my 23SS, on long trips or when on curvy mountain roads.

i haven't noticed anything like this. have the dealer look at it.
wrinkles on rubber roofs aren't that unusual but it still should be looked at and documented by the dealer.
  • Check your posts...I think you posted this exact question a couple of days ago and got some good answers..
I know I tried to help.
