slide out operation

My friend has a 2008 Damon MH with 2 slide outs.when parking at a campsite the motor must be shut off before the slide outs will extend. After they are extended the motor will start and the MH can be driven.(tried this in the driveway) Is this normal or is something wired backwards?

  • Except for Foretravel, I have never seen any motorhome that would not start and drive with the rooms out. The logistics and the potential problems of interfacing a KILL system would be a headache. One thing Tiffin has done is install the front slideout switches in the Drivers and Passenger seat backs. Tiffin got tired of paying for damaged seats from dumbbells running the rooms out and in without moving the seats forward for clearance. Doug
  • On my Monaco coach the slides won't move(either in or out) with the engine running.
Once extended, you can start the engine and drive. I guess they figure that if you look in the rear view mirrors you will get a clue that something is not right. :B
  • My Winnebago Adventurer will start and can be driven with the slides out. The reason I know I was in Cheyenne, WY. one time and the bedroom slide would not go in. I drove right thru town too the repair place with the slide out. I just had to be careful and watch where I was going.

Mine won't deploy with the engine running either. And the parking brake must be engaged. Haven't found the need to try cranking the engine or driving with the slide out, though.

  • My foretravel would not go into gear if the slide was out. It would run but not go into gear. Also the slide would not deploy unless the park brake was on. There was an override switch in the HWH box that let the coach go in gear if need be.
  • As far as I know, no common motorhome or TT/5th wheel has any sensor that will warn you a slide is in the out position.
