Slide-outs---tell me about them!

I have experience with and a pretty good understanding of RV systems, except for slide-outs.

There are a LOT of posts on here about problems with slide-outs---leaks, seals, retraction problems, extension problems, alignment problems, broken gears, on and on.....

So out of 100 RVs with slideouts---how many are going to have problems?

What are the most common problems, and how can they be avoided?

What routine maintenance is needed?

Does the added weight on one side affect handling or tire wear?

I'm still far from pulling the trigger on a RV purchase, but am using this time to collect info, & figure out what will suit my needs/budget. Right now I'm leaning towards a small C, well-used. And a lot of them have slide-outs. I don't see myself buying anything with more than one slide-out, though.

Definitely need the RV to be use-able without opening the slide-out, and likely wouldn't even open it if traveling by myself. But the extra space would obviously be great for more than one person.

All input appreciated!

  • Multiple problems with our single slide in a 2011 Thor Chateau class C since 2011. Started brand new. Latest was one motor burned out the first night of a 10 day trip. Luckily we could still use RV with slide in. That is a big consideration when deciding on a particular model. Research!
  • Your question is much the same as... How long or how many miles can I drive on a tire before I get a flat.
Not as simple an answer as it may appear.

Exactly. Which is why I asked about what fraction do have problems. wonder if there is a spot on here to make a poll?
  • Any moving part can break. We have had two rigs with slide outs, no problems with any. We certainly do enjoy the added space. Yes, watch how you can use the space when the slideout are in.
Ours is fine but a friend can't open the frig. We have fun use of the galley. We have to crawl onto the bed when the slide out is in, and can't use the bottom drawers. Not an issue.
