slide outs

Have a Winnebago 2009 Adventurer with 3 slides. Having issues with 2 of the 3 slides since bought home new. The dealership has worked on the sides many times. Recently (September) replaced controller. Never sure whether the slides will extend or retract. Often having to use the crank to extend slide all the way out or to retract. Have contacted Customer service---many times---there suggestions did not solve the problem or problems with the slides. Is there a slide system (other than regular maintenance) will work consistently? Is there a company that specializes in slide trouble shooting or doing up grades. Totally frustrated with the situation. We are full timers and spend much of or time helping children homes and orphanages at no cost to them. I am to the point of not knowing what to do next. Advice with solutions would be appreciated. web site is www.AdventurersforChrist.org

  • many good suggestions, of which many have been addressed to include the grounds, going the the procedure of resetting the slides with the controller. one slide was partially removed. What has not been done is to visit the Winnebago blog web site or rv-2 site or going to the factory. is there a slide out system that has less problems than others.

Almost to the point of going back to no slides.
  • I would check the grounds on both the slide controllers and the rams. The controllers work a lot like the steps (or power windows in cars) in that they have a current sensor that will stop the motor if the controller senses a high current demand by the motor. If you have poor grounding the added resistance will in effect increase the current demand which the controller will sense and stop movement.

Another potential problem is with the rams. Each slide has two motor driven rams that must be synchronized to extend or retract the slide evenly. It only takes as little as an inch or two to misalign the slide, cause a jam, increase motor current and shut down by the controller. The key is the current for each motor the controller senses. If you have a bad ground on one or the two motors the controller may declare a misalignment and shut down.

The coach being a 2009 is reaching the age that the grounds on the chassis may need cleaning just like the roof seals need reworked. Not difficult but rather than trying to find a particular one that might be your problem just clean all that you can find. A comfortable creeper, a couple of hand tools and some sand paper will clean everything. If you want to take it a step further electrical grease will help prevent future corrosion.

But then again I could be beyond left field and somewhere in the furthest parking lot of the ball park.
  • I would suggest that rather than talking with the rep over the phone you actually take the unit to the factory service department in Forest City IA. In cases like yours it's almost impossible for you to describe and the rep to visualize everything that's going on in the few seconds it takes for the slide to act up.

When the factory technicians can actually witness the problem you stand a much better chance of getting it repaired properly. It may be inconvenient, but a single visit will likely cure your problems once and for all. If you do decide to go take along all the paper work from your visits to the dealer. There are cases where Winnebago will make "good will" adjustments if this has been an ongoing problem the dealer hasn't been able to resolve.
  • Richard, I can understand your frustration. Try another forum for just Winny owners. "IRV2.com" then go to the Winnebago Owners forum.. Some of the owners might have an idea. Good luck
  • rep has only talked with me by phone on various concerns. from slide outs to brown spots forming under the protective film on front of motorhome. we had a warranty for a couple of years and it appeared many of our concerns were not covered or only partially covered. example broke down in campground with slide not retracting-----paid service call and that was all. this was Good Sams Warranty. There seemed to always be some type of exception I fell into. Locked our selves out of motorhome around 7PM two summers ago, called, they did not have a person come till 9AM need morning.Had to call for a taxi and stay at the closest hotel 45 minutes away. Just had usually bad experience with warranties. I've been able to fix many things myself. And I understand that things do break. But these slides are costing me $500-$1200 each time the look at them. They seem to work couple of moths then something else needs repairing. I spend a lot of time doing maintenance and checking things over. Just finished sealing the roof to side wall section where cracks forming in seam, draining water from behind maker lights, sealing around the antenna, calking the front and rear cap seal.I especially give attention to the slide rams.

Did the dealership contact the factory reps, did the reps even looked at the problem or did they just guess over the phone, the dealer needs to contact the reps and fix the issues.

    Sorry for your problems.

I bought a 08 Bounder in June this year, paid good money and was worried about issues such as slide outs, engine, trans, etc, etc, so I bought a 4 year warranty to cover everything, however my Bounder has been a trooper, not a issue other than little things, appears the warranty company is going to make good money with my Bounder, seems to be well built..

  • What slide system does it have, electric or hydraulic, have you contacted Winnebago about the issues.
