Sliding Window Leaking when it Rains

The passenger sliding window on my 2006 Hurricane 31D leaks water when it rains The water is running down the out side of the glass into the track from the top and filling up the track at the bottom and then goes down the inside wall to the carpet. It appears that the rubber has pulled away and that a portion of the felt (for lack of a better word) inside the track is worn or missing. any Idea how I can fix this? Where can I get parts for the inside track. Hope I've explained this correctly.

Problem solved. I removed the tracks top and bottom and the one for the screen also. I cleaned them and put a little Silicone rubber lube on them and then reinstalled. There is a rubber insert that holds the top glass in and one corner had shrunk creating a gap at the top and acting like a funnel when it rained allowing the water to run down the vertical track to the bottom track filling it with water and the water could not get out the partly plugged weep holes fast enough. I pulled the rubber insert that holds the glass in out part way so that the gap would be at the bottom and not at the top. I took a garden hose and put a lot of water on the top of the window, and with the weep holes clear I could see water running out but not filling and over flowing the track. Problem solved for now.

  • Some of the drain holes have plastic covers that are designed to minimize the whistling noise as you drive down the road. These covers will pop off so that the drain hole can be cleaned. The plastic covers do get brittle with age and may break when you try to remove them but replacements can usually be found on the internet.
  • I periodically clean the tracks and drain holes with compressed air.

I just checked mine this morning after a hard rain and the same thing happened. I have cleaned the weep holes numerous times with a knife blade and removed the felt /rubber track and cleaned under it because mold and dirt build up under it and plug the weep holes. I just cleaned it 5 weeks ago and was amazed how much mold grows under the track. Has anyone replaced the track, and if so did you have to remove the sliding window?
I am sure that is most of the problem although some of the felt is missing at the rear vertical track of the window. I remember reading somewhere where they drilled some extra holes to help solve this problem.

  • I would also recommend checking the weep holes outside. Many times people get to zealous to 'seal' all the leaks, and they actually put sealant in the holes that should drain out the rain water!

    Good luck,

    Fred.
  • On the outside of the windows on the bottom rail, there should be what they call weep holes that the water drains out of the bottom rail through. Sometimes they have little plastic covers 1 - 2" long over them. These need to be cleaned to allow the drainage. Often the little covers pull off for the cleaning. Have you checked these?
