Slobber tube

Has anyone rerouted the slobber tube on your diesel engine. I have never had anyone other than Holt Brothers (CAT)people work on my CAT engine. They re routed the tube out the side because it was clogging up the radiator in the original position.
  • Again, as long as the "holes out" have more total area than the ID of the OE hose so it offers no restriction, you are good to go.

    Would also suggest using stainless steel or bronze wool, as driving in rain will get some water in the jug and lead to a mess with ferrous metal wool.

    I "service" mine every oil change-- basically cleaning out the ounce or so of oil, the dirt and water that have accumulated over the year of driving.
  • I used a 1 gal windshield washer fluid jug. I put some holes around the top and routed the hose into the jug. I used some stiff wire to tie it to an adjacent hose. I put some steel wool in the bottom. I clean it every oil change. I had a side rad so the mess was always on my toad.
  • One can also build a filter for the slober tube. A plastic jar with a lid big enough to cut a hole for the slober tuber and a few smaller holes to allow the vapor in and out. Partialy fill jar with steel wool put lid up on slober tube with a zip tie around the slober tube to prevent lid sliding down and a little space between tube and bottom of jar. Screw jar on check once in a while to clean. Keep oil off of toad and back of MH.

  • Yes, very common.
    I extended mine down below the front diff so it wouldn't make such a mess of all the surrounding components.
  • Sure-- a common and inexpensive modification. Under $10 and 10 minutes.

    Covered in every Caterpillar Maintenance Seminar for the last decade. And, the same for Cummins (actually ANY diesel engine before 2008 when closed crankcase became standard).
