Try it. Just pull your knee away, don't even look at him, nothing verbal or visual, no eye contact, nothing. It will take a while, but will work eventually. Have patience.

Some dogs don't change by simply ignoring their behavior - just like some kids don't. And with some dogs, no eye contact will actually increase their behavior as they try harder to get your attention. My Bat-dog will stop doing something quicker (other than the beagle talking back) if I give her direct eye contact - it makes her uncomfortable ("Mom, she's staring at me!"). Every dog is different and what works well on one dog can actually create emotional trauma on another one.

LOL! Let me give you my primary example. Jake does all basic obedience, hugs on command, stays by my side when walking (even on the beach), knows which door to go to when I say "X" is home (hubby comes in through garage, son via front door), and is otherwise very responsive to all commands. Except "paw". He WILL NOT give his paw. He will tap you on the shoulder with his paw if HE wants a hug, but if you do the standard command he looks at you with this blank look and won't lift his paw. Ever. We withhold any reward if he doesn't respond so we aren't rewarding bad behavior. Maybe in his mind he feels he "wins" on this one!

Contrary to what some on here would like us to believe, some dogs just don't or won't get it. Period. Some are just plain DUMB and others are just too stubborn. My dog knows all sorts of trick and commands but no is not one that ever caught on no matter what we tried. He is the biggest slobber puss you ever seen and he knows it too. He will go get a drink of water just to reload and come wipe his face off on your leg. We keep towels hanging over the kitchen chairs and this help a bit unless you come before the towel then you are getting a wet leg. Its like a game with him and you will not win.

We have one that sneezes on us when she is excited and wants attention. She also licks your wrist (she has a fast tongue) when being petted. She has a soft temperament and takes corrections (corrections of any dog) hard. She has no concept of personal space; should would crawl inside your skin with you if she could.

The only thing we have found that works with her is "GO". She gets some attention and then is told to "GO" (i.e. get back) before she takes it too far (starts licking and sneezing on us, constantly moving closer and touching more of her body on us). We just have to manage her personality; no training will change her personality.

Teach the dog to keep some distance, when you want to give it attention follow the lead of some owners of Newfoundland's (and other loose jowl breeds); get a towel.


BTW: bitter apple does not always work; our first Border Collie found the taste appealing. He enjoyed licking it.

Just some random thoughts:

My dogs will sometimes lick the knees of Ed's jeans, because that's where he wipes his hands after munching on chips.

Sometimes dogs find licking something, soothing. My late Aussie would lick carpet on occasion (until told to stop)

Maybe the dog knows your knee isn't "right"??

Or.... he's actually really smart and has learned a cause-and-effect way to get you to pet him....LOL!

It sure would be handy if they could talk....

Some dogs will always lick - it's part of their personality. A simple "no" and moving away will help him learn that you don't like it. But you'll never get him to stop completely - he's always going to try to get a quick one in.

Exactly! The love of my life, our little Poquita, couldn't hold her "licker" and it dawned on me, that's the way they "pet" us. It isn't a nasty habit but an instinctive thing, mama washing pups. How we miss those doggy kisses..

I get that too. My sons dog licks my right ankle each and every time. He doesnt do it to anyone else. Took me awhile but I realized that that is the foot that I had run over by a little old lady in a wheelchair (long story). So I wonder if he is sensing the damage there?
