Slow moving Speeder

I do try to pull over if there are 5 or more vehicles behind me. I usually get thankful beeps from the folks as they speed pass while I'm waiting in the turnout, which makes me feel like I did the right thing.

LOL those aren't thank you beeps, those are "what the beep took you so long to beep'n pull over and let us pass."

You have to ask yourself two questions. One, do I want a ticket for speeding or impeding? and Two, how courteous am I as a driver of a motorhome?

In answer to the first one, California law says "No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property." Note that is says NOTHING about POSTED speed limits. There are ONlY two absolutes in California. You may NEVER exceed 65MPH and All vehicles while TOWING may not exceed 55MPH. Once a long time ago I was driving my car and not pulling anything. I was doing 65 and the speed limit was 65. I had a string of cars behind me. Don't remember how many but I would guess something like 10. A cop coming from the opposite direction made a U turn and came after me. He said anytime you have 3 or more vehicles behind you you must pull over and let those vehicles pass. This was in Indiana and he said it tells you on the first page of the driving manual. I told him I was doing the speed limit and he said it didn't matter he could write me a ticket if he wanted to.

In Texas folks want you to pull over on the shoulder so they can pass. I don't think so.

What the police will cite is "obstructing traffic"; whether or not you are at or above the posted speed limit. I once was pulled over in Crystal Springs, Florida for being queued for a left turn into a Walmart parking area because I was supposed to be limited to the right lane only (!). The young highway patrolman was pretty agitated about it, too.

There is NO speed listed, i.e. you are in violation in you are holding up 5 or more vehicles and you do not use a turnout. Have a bit of what most would consider common courtesy.

When you say speed limit is 55 is that on a highway where RV's, and trucks pulling trailers is 55 all others go faster (like 65 -70 posted)? Or do all vehicles have 55 posted?

If all have 55 posted then I will use pull outs if I have traffic as I do not like the tailgaters and risk stupid people passing me dangerously. If you are in the zones RV and Trucks do 55 all others go faster then it is obvious use the pullout.

Rumor has it that in California, some years back a man was written a ticket for Impeading traffic.. He was in fact doing the posted speed limit. (The judge dismissed it but with a stern warning to keep up with the flow)

Now I did not verify that.. The next story I have verified, in fact I am part of it.

At work one day I got a call (9-1-1) Complaining about one of my Troopers (Also named John) who was driving his marked patrol car at the posted speed limit.. Mre. Speeder wanna-be was complaining "he is going to cause an accident driving like that"... I transferred the caller to my Sgt. who then ask me which trooper it was (i already knew so I told him) and ask if he wanted me to relay any message... Perhaps "Good job".. he agreed and I did.

each spring on our way west from Chicago we spend a couple of days in OK City and if there's zero tolerance for speeders OK must have a different definition of zero tolerance. I can't recall the last time we've even seen a highway patrol car patrolling the toll roads or an OKC squad patrolling I-40, I-44 or I-35 in OKC much less with a speeder pulled over. we came thru OKC twice this year each time spending at least 2-days in town and traffic seemed like a swarm of angry bees surrounding our MH as we traveled thru town. and we were 5-over at the time.

I always accommodate those behind me that want to go faster however I rarely need to pull over or stop in a turn out. I simply put my blinkers on, move over all the way possible to the right, slow down and they typically pass me with a thank you wave.
