Something drawing on my battery

I have a 2010 Roadtrek Versatile 17.

Something has been drawing power from my van battery. Twice I was able to charge the battery and it worked fine. This morning, after having the motor home sitting about a month, the battery was dead again. Tried to charge it but it would not take a charge. Finally bought a new battery.

I still don't know what is drawing power from my van battery. I suspect that the GPS system is the cause. I will have someone with the appropriate equipment, check it out to try to find the culprit.

In the meantime, has anyone had that problem? If so, what was causing your battery to run down?
  • The priority start system is interesting. Never heard of it. Could you give me some information about it especially where we could get one and whether it is self install or dealer install. Thanks.
  • After buying my 1992 (in 2011) I had an alarm system installed and it seems the battery has been "parasitized" ever since. I just dont think that blinking red LED can drain my battery. I have had 3-4 places try to find the "leak", 2 of them found "something" and 2 just said it was the battery, so I have had 2 new batteries in 2.5 years. I am through with trying to find the leak and instead went to a "priority start" system that prevents total drain of the battery. First thing I notice is my remote unlock doesnt work, when I get in and turn the key there is nothing, then I turn it off, turn it back on and the priority start reconnects to let me start the van. This is the only sane way I can deal with "leaks" altho it means my alarm is probably not working at some point in the night. My van does not sit for more than 3 days without being started because I have to flip side of street where I park in the city.
  • My vehicle is a Roadtrek motor home not a trailer. The house battery is controlled by a shut off switch and that is not a problem.

The problem is the van starting battery. However, the same principle may apply and I will look for a battery shut off switch for the van battery.

    Thanks.

If it is going to sit for over a couple of days you need to use a battery disconnect switch to totally disconnect either POS or NEG battery terminal... The trailer has several what is called PARASITIC DRAINs that are connected at all times like the Propane ALARM sensors, maybe fridge or heater sense boards etc...

You can hook up a small output SOLAR Panel, BATTERY TENDER or just plug your trailer into a 120VAC Garage 15AMP power connection and allow the on-board converter/charger to keep your battery charged up.

I keep my trailer plugged into the garage connection all the time here when not on the road.

Been doing this since 2008 and batteries are still going.

  • A month.. that's not a short time for small draws to take it down. I'd measure the voltage each day and see how fast it's going down.
