Spray painting new decals

My 11year old MH has the same issue as many of you have, cracked and peeling decals. I have a co-worker who used to apply decals, signs and paint in his previous job. He has the same issues and is thinking about removing all the decals with the 3M decal remover. Then prep the area, tape where the shadow is and apply auto spray paint.
Any thoughts or suggestions? Yes, it's a lot of work, but since the original decals are no longer available, there isn't much choice.
  • I got lucky, Mobilty RV in Iowa had amost the complete set of decals. I bought what i hadn't already replaced. The almost complete set were $800. They were on sale 50% off. I ended up paying $250 with shipping for what I needed. That was easy. Now the hard part of removing Red Max Pro, the decals and oxidation. I did the front of the cabover and it took 2 hours using 3M decal and adhesive remover with a putty knife. That left a good clean surface. Hair dryer produced little cracks in the filon. Can't do anything about difference in color where decals were.
  • You could call Steve at RV Stripes and Graphics too. They are in Mesa Az and do amazing work.
  • I did this very thing. The decal on one side (which the PO had obviously had pointed toward the sun a lot) was peeling off. After contacting the manufacturer, I learned they only stock decals for three years. So, I removed the peeling decal, used the "shadow" as a guide for taping, and spray painted the new graphic. I am pleased with the result.

My graphics fade from a deep graphite metallic through silver metallic to a a bronze metallic on the end. I was a little nervous about trying to duplicate this effect, but it turned out great.

The only thing I would do differently is that I would put clear-coat over the color. I could still do that, but I don't really want to go through the masking process again! Good luck with whatever choice you make. Every RV is a work of art, and you are the only one who needs to be pleased with the result.
  • Have you checked with your RV's manufacturer? I was recently able to buy nearly all needed decals from Winnebago, not too expensive either. I've replaced a few already and have extra for later. My rig is 14 yrs old.
  • My vote is for applying new decals.

Here is a shop that will "re-create your existing decals" and mail them to you.

Several people I know have used him. Great before and after pictures of ones where they removed them and put new ones on if you bring your RV in. My friends just make it a destination RV trip to get their decals fixed.

  • I've seen some older RV's that have no decals. Not sure if they were painted all over or just had them removed and the difference in color faded out after some time. I wouldn't mind taking the awful decals off, they are in terrible shape after the 5 years we have had this RV. But I don't want to spend a ton of money replacing them.
  • we were able to hook up with a police officer in our town that actually does decals on their all their units as well as the sheriff department. Car quality not the junk RV company's use. We were very pleased with his work. Maybe you can find such a person.
  • As an alternative have you looked around for vinyl wraps? I'm not sure if they make something large enough for a motorhome. If you're after the same style it may be possible for a vinyl shop to get measurements and cut the same design. Just a thought.
