Stairs on new Class A stuck

I have been having an issue with the auto-stairs on our new Class A. A few weeks ago, I took my motorhome to the dealer to get some warranty work done. When I arrived at the dealership, the stairs wouldn't extend. They worked fine when I got into the motorhome to drive to the dealership.

A few days later I picked up the motorhome and the tech told me that this is a common problem with these stairs as the motor will sometimes seize up. He told me that more than likely it would happen again and if it did, to loosen the 4 bolts that hold the motor and to tap on the motor to un-seize it. The last 2 trips we have taken the stairs have operated fine.

Last night I went to my storage garage to get something out of the motorhome. When I closed the door, it didn't close completely and I opened the door again before the stairs had fully retracted. Now the stairs are stuck and they are only retracted about 80%. Opening and closing the door does not activate the stairs.

Besides the advice the tech gave me about loosening the bolts and tapping on the motor, does anyone else have any tips or advice on how to fix this issue?

The Tech who told you to loosen the bolts and tap the motor must be reading my posts on the forums :) I came up with that, but I don't loosen the bolts.

This is part theory, here is the theory part. Kwikee buys "2nds". the motors are common window riser motors used by either ford or GM or Chrysler depending on your step model but I believe they buy "2nds" the motors often have a "Dead spot" and if the motor stops on the dead spot. ... well it don't work

Taping the thing causes the motor to rotate slightly (the aramature rotates) getting off the dead spot.

How I fixed mine.. twice.. I opened the transmission (DO THIS CAREFULLY and if you do not remove it from RV (I did the 2nd time) Tarp the ground as there is a "Small part" that can easily get lost. Re position the gears a notch or two so the motor does not stop where it used to stop. Works great.
  • If the RV is brand new and still under warranty take it back to the dealer and have them replace the broken stairs. Do not take any excuses like "they do that", they don't. I purchased a used (10 year old) RV, had it for 10 more years and never had a problem with the stairs(kept them greased per manf.)
Make sure they replace them or you will continue to have problems with them.
  • Check the fuse, check the magnet on the door frame (usually stuck on with tape and easily knocked off).

With a new unit you should not be needing any gearbox intervention. With those after some time the nylon gears strip out and you buy a new motor.
  • Check where stairs are grounded and make sure ground is clean and secure...
