We like to stay outside for the piece and quiet. We stay at The Blue Water Key RV resort. It's a little longer ride then some of the closer RV resorts, but it's top shelf and better then the others by far. We love staying there.

Friendly hosts when were there a couple of years ago for Fantasy Fest!!! ;) - dieharderExplorerIf you're looking for something to cross off a bucket list, then go to Bluewater Key. I've never been, but it's on mine, whenever I can afford it.
If you're a little more budget conscious, then look at Jolly Roger in Marathon. - OldmeExplorerIf you are retired military contact the Navy Base At Key West.
They do have a limited number of sites available on base.
For those not with an RV they also have number of regular housing trailers
available at their Whitehead St. tempporaty housing park. - Executive45Explorer IIIWe stayed two weeks at Bluewater Keys and enjoyed it a lot! Boyds and Leos were pretty rough when we went thru. Not to be snobby, but I couldn't see their appeal. There is a small park, (10 spaces) in Key West that was very nice called El Mar. We drove thru but didn't stay there.
IMHO, most of Key West is pretty run down as far as camping goes. Weather was good, sunsets a disappointment.
Dennis - Bill_SatelliteExplorer IIBluewater Key is a great place to stay as long as you can afford it!!!
Wow, that's going to put a serious dent in most folks (us common folk) budget. - fla-gypsyExplorerBluewater Key RV is what you're looking for if you want the best the experience has to offer. Otherwise the 4 state parks offer the best options IMO.

Technically, there are no campgrounds on the island of Key West. But the next Island over has a few, notably, Leo's and Boyd's. Both have good reviews.
Looking to stay in the Florida Keys in March. Would it be better to stay outside Key West or right down their with the crowds.
If you like to drink and party, I'd definitely stay at one of those. If not, you'll find better scenery a little further east. Either way, make your reservations now and if they don't have room, try to get on a waiting list. March is spring break season and perfect weather. - tsetsafExplorer IIITechnically unless you are ex-military you can't stay "in" Key West rather you will be on one of the other keys. We stayed down there last year with no reservations for 3 weeks... just can't be picky. Here is the bible on campgrounds In the Florida Keys
- LynnandCarolExplorerwe stayed in Marathon at the Jolly Roger in the middle and then day tripped both ways up and down.
- IvylogExplorer IIIKW is not no of my favorite places. I'd stay in Marathon or further north and drive the toad to KW one day. There are plenty of RV parks that do not advertise so pick a key and use google to search for campgrounds... even short notice.
