- rgatijnet1Explorer IIII converted one back in the 60's. I used a small enclosure in the back for a bathroom and used one of the self contained toilets popular at that time, which contained it's own water and waste tank. We did not have a shower and relied on campground showers. I had bunk type beds that folded down on each side for the wife and I and a fixed bed on the bottom, which included storage underneath. At that time we were using a Coleman type stove for cooking and a cooler to hold our perishable food. We had no air conditioning but we grew up without AC in the South so it was not that big of a deal at the time.
The floor was elevated and there was room underneath for water tanks but they would have to be custom made. Certainly a roof top AC unit could have been added. I did panel the side walls and add insulation which was fine for a mild Winter. During the hot months, we drove with the doors slid back and open with us securely belted in to our seats.
Basically we were not much more than a tent on wheels but we did put over 15,000 miles on it with our 10-11 year old Son. We towed a trailer with a couple of motorcycles on the back, since I was on the motorcycle racing circuit at the time. The thing always drove like a truck but it was very reliable with it's 6 cylinder GM engine. I never was concerned about gas mileage.
Basically it worked great for our family and had more room than the ship that I was stationed on in the US Navy.
Not bad at all for a couple in their early 20's. Everything since then has been an upgrade but we still have not forgotten the really good times we had in the bread truck. AFter 50+ years of marriage, we still are traveling together. :B - ets1996ExplorerTry google Stepvan to Rv conversion there are lots of videos ,resourses etc. Ive seen a couple of them there are alot of possibilities although I have no personal experience with this conversion
