I solved that problem on my 2004 Fleetwood, here is what I do. The last thing do after everything else is done is stay inside, make sure the step switch is in the closed position, shut the door, the step comes in, turn the battery disconnect switch OFF, then here is the hard part, open the door, notice that the step stays closed, make a big step to the ground, shut and lock the door, done. You could use a step stool outside but you would have to have someone place it close to the door after the step is closed, I just step down, its a long way down but doable for me. Works for me, step stays in and no battery drain due to the step light staying on.
