Storm Damage

Saturday as we were assembling items to pack for the big trip to Virginia for the family reunion, the owner of our storage lot called. Said there was what could have been a tornado, and there was damage to the cover and several of the RVs parked thereunder. We had just finished a brief thunderstorm. Off we went toe the lot, about 5 miles south of us in Alvin, TX. There was the pole shed shredded, one of the support poles lying against the bedroom window (suffered a spider web shatter without blowing out). I could go on in depth, but it was a freak microburst/straight line shear that tore a path only about 30 ft wide. Including our rig. She still runs, everything works mechanically, but we need some work done before we leave. Planned Thursday departure can go back to Monday. We would need to replace the one window, and probably take the awning off, as one pivot tore lose.

So looking forward to a busy week. Anyone know a reliable repair shop in the Houston area? Camping World is a possibility, but they always take so long. I want safety work done in the short term, then leave it for weeks when we are back. Oh, Progressive is our insureer (handed off from USAA), and they said they will have an adjuster out tomorrow (Monday).

Cheers

  • Thanks everyone. The Progressive adjuster was excellent. He spent about 4 hours documenting everything. I had no idea the kind of damage we can incur on our coaches. The awning arm was pushed out about 4" and has to be replaced. An 8"-10" v shaped tear in the roof along the radius, along with about a 2" gash and voila we need an entire new roof. Drivers side windshield, and a bedroom window. Add in all the scratches on the fiberglass and we are suddenly looking at $10,000 in repairs. He recommended several shops he was familiar with, and I called 2 I knew about (1 no RV repairs, the other, motor and drive train work only)

I bought the coach at PPL, but they were backed up. I called Holiday World (from the adjuster's recommendation) and the service manager said he would come out that evening and look my rig over. Him coming to me!!!! He said no problem getting her safely running so we could leave for the family reunion, and then he would be happy to perform the rest of the repairs. We picked her up this afternoon, and are now packing for the trip. Looks like crime scene tape all over the side with the scrapes, but we are happy.

Sure glad I didn't have to go back to Camping World. I highly recommend the staff at Holiday World South in League City Tx if anyone needs service in this area.
  • There's are several RV parts stores, dealers and repair shops on I45 north near Spring TX. I saw them when we stayed there last winter. Can't remember the names but just google "RV repair Spring TX" and they will come up. Might help.
  • I agree. Ask your adjuster or appraiser. I don't think I'd use Camping World, due to past experiences we've had with them.

Sorry to hear about your problem.
  • Sorry to hear about your problem. Ask you adjuster who they refer to. If not the adjuster call your person who is handling your claim. They should be able to advise you who to go to. Good Luck.
