Stupid question I guess...

Hey good folks,
We just got our first diesel pusher and I have a stupid question. When the DP is parked in my driveway and not hooked up to shore power does the generator when going charge up all the batteries?

~Thanks, John
  • All RV's charge the house batteries from the converter.

Some RV's charge the chassis batteries from the converter.

The only way to tell if your RV charges the chassis batteries from the converter is to check, either with a VOM, or by manufacturer documentation.

WHOA! Rv power source is NOT the same wiring as a household range! Good advice to look up the correct wiring diagram. 240 volts could fry your electronics. 50 amp RV service is two separate 120v legs. No problem to use adapters and step down to a 15 or 20 amp household plug to charge batteries.

    This is precisely, 100% wrong.

Both the 50 amp RV outlets and the 4 prong range outlets are wired:

    1: L1
    2: L2
    3: NEUTRAL
    4: GROUND

From L1 to NEUTRAL or GROUND is 120v.
From L2 to NEUTRAL or GROUND is 120v.
    From L1 to L2 is 240v.
From NEUTRAL to GROUND is 0v.

    On both types of circuits.

Genset should take the place of shore power for all practical purposes and for doing the same thing. As to whether, either will charge the chassis battery, depends on the design of the coach, as some will and some won't. All will charge the house batteries, however.
Our's does both and auto switches over to the chassis, once the house batteries reach a certain level, but again, it's not a given.
  • If you find that your chassis batteries are not being charged by the converter, you can add a Trik-L-Start for a 5 amp charge, or its big brother the Amp-L-Start for a 15 amp charge.

I did, and it solved my charging problems.
