surge protector?

Do you NEED one? The short answer is no. The long answer is maybe. At my seasonal site when everyone is there on a weekend and running their A/C in 90* temps and the low voltage bug bites I am ok with it. This winter while in TX I was shut down twice by high voltage. Now my unit is an PI EMS and has more than surge protection. Why did I get the EMS? Three years ago when in TX a thunderstorm went through and I only had the PI surge protector (30 amp). It took the hit instead of my RV. When I went with a 50 amp RV I bought the EMS.

It is up to you how much burden you are willing to bear in the event there is an electrical problem and you suffer loss due to it.

BTW do you carry a spare tire, RV insurance, etc.?

Like having insurance, the most important reason for having surge protection is peace of mind. Camped several years in trailers without one. Investing in a MH, I wanted one less thing to worry about. It was/is worth the cost to me.

I check the pedestal before plugging in and I still have a Progressive Industries unit in our teardrop trailer because it does have electronics. We camp in the mid west and while I unplug during thunderstorms, what happens when you are out and one comes up. I have three layers of surge suppression in our home, and it has saved us from losing computers TV's and refrigerator... why would I want less in the trailer?

You have a fire extinguisher dont you??? have it and hope you never need it. dont have and you may be sorry.... same idea :S

Someone on the forest river forum just lost everything electronic do to an open neutral on a 50amp. I had mine protect me last year due to a brownout condition at a campground. Just like insurance, 4x4 and a sliding hitch, don't need it until it is too late.

I bought the Progressive Industries 30 amp portable model this year. I confess...I've camped since 1988 without having a problem. But, I have gotten into campsites and discovered the 30 amp service wasn't working, or the 15 amp service didn't. If it only protects your rig once, it's paid for itself many times over when you think of the cost to replace a tv, circuit board of a fridge, microwave, etc. Currently, we're on a three week trip, and it's nice to plug it in first and know that the electrical service is working properly.

I use minimal surge protection on the converter and the fridge. Low voltage is the killer, not surge. I'd consider an autoformer long before I'd invest in a proper energy management system, because the low voltage cut out on current devices is far below my comfort level.

I use one and it has come in handy.
