- gswcgiExplorerMark Twain has it right. I have the portable model, good product.
- The BIGGEST seller of Surge protectors is when the RV'er has a power surge or lightning strike and there appliances fail. The WAIT for the appliances to be fixed or repaired can take up to 2 weeks and that is a LONG time to be without needed appliances, especially the Charging system which usually is destroyed in a incident. I cannot remember anytime a customer WITH a surge protector has ever come in with a problem from a surge or lightning. Doug
- joelcNomadY-E-S, YES AND yes. Any way you want to say it. I have 50A service so naturally I have the 50 Amp version. There is a 30 or 50 amp that you can get. I have the Progressive Industries EMS-LCHW50 (built in version) since the unit was new in 2012. It has saved our unit many times. Well worth the investment. Don't know if they have the same model or improved models, but well worth it.
- AvaExplorerMy 30 amp hard wired Progressive unit with remote display has activated with low voltage, and high voltage, no ground and recently with a reversed polarized plug.
- haste_makerExplorer IIThanks for the info, I will be getting the PROGRESSIVE INDUSTRIES EMS-PT50X Portable RV Surge Protector (50 A)
- azrvingExplorerI have 30 amp hardwired progressive. It hurt to buy it but when you read about how much damage can be done I felt I had to buy one. Search RV improper wiring of things like pedestals where ELECTRICIANS wire them wrong and do thousand of dollars of damage.
It's good to read and familiarizing yourself with everything from simple corrosion of the plug end causing lost grounds or open neutral or shooting 240 volts through an appliance on a 50 amp rig.
People have died from "hot skin" problems. RVs have their quirkey, expensive and dangerous side. The cord is plugged in over and over, it's in a wet/damp poor environment, the pedestals are worked on by incompetent people. Cord terminals should be kept clean, test pedestals, check RV for hot skin. Kids and pets are more easily killed by hot skin. - georgelesleyExplorerGet one that shuts off power if voltage drops too low, unless you enjoy buying AC units. Ours saved us a few times last summer.
- old_guyExplorercheap insurance
- msturtzExplorerI have used Progressive Dynamics and Surge Guard. I have had great luck with both. I only recommend the EMS versions which have the active monitoring and will disconnect at any time when detecting most power problems: low voltage, high voltage, open ground, open or floating neutral and so on. The basic surge only versions only protect against power surges.
- MarkTwainExplorerWithout a surge protector, you have every thing to loose and nothing to gain. Trusting that every RV Park owner will maintain and check their electric systems on a regular schedule is a foolish bet??????
