sway pulling toad?????

I just got back from my first long distance trip. I have a 32 foot class C and pull a jeep wrangler. This was my first trip and it seemed to sway a lot in the wind, not so much the jeep but the rv. Not sure if I am just new to it and don't know how to steer yet or if I am over steering?????? I have blue ox tow bar and patriot break system. Any comments welcome thanks.

Happy camping
  • If this is a Ford E series, make sure your front end has at least +5 degrees of caster before you throw money at the problem.
  • Is your tow bar with in the Blue ox specs for being level.
You will get some wind movement. The rig is a big box and cross winds can be difficult.
The toad having tow bar not close to level can cause sway.
  • I didn't start towing until I had a few tens of thousands of miles without towing. I have not found that the towed vehicle has an impact on cross wind handling, though it does matter dealing with 15 mph to 30 mph curves taken at too high a speed.

You need to get used to the winds, sort out what is your problem from over-reacting, what are the handling problems of the RV itself, before you add the towed vehicle as a complication. Starting out with the toad is a lot like beginning your flying lessons in a glider tug.
