Switch at the door

Most steps are designed to stop when they hit something like a curb. Block the steps, open the door and disconnect the battery.

I believe that whats going on as how could they retract when the power is removed? but with power off they wont extend either

I would take some time and fix the switch and save all the worry later
or simply close the door with engine running and they should retract then have someone unplug the power supply to steps then simply open door and walk out and lock it for now

National connected the Steps to the COACH batteries. The steps also have a LAST OUT feature. That means regardless of what you do, the steps will ALWAYS extend when the door is opened. Kwikkee designed that to prevent someone falling out due to the steps staying retracted. Now, your problem is, you want the steps to stay retracted when stored. EVEN if the Battery disconnect worked, you still have to have the door open and steps extended, if you try to use the Disconnect system. The STEP power fuse should be next to the entry door in the storage compartment in the battery control fuse center. FIND that fuse and just pull it when the steps are retracted. Another way is to just disconnect the 4 wire step plug underneath by the steps. Doug

Look on the screen door.. There is a magnet. likely near the bottom on the Jam side, it will most likely be a small black retangular thing.

Using a magnetic pick up tool place the magnet where that black plastic thign will be when the door is closed. WITH the switch OFF... This SHOULD retract the steps.

Now turn off.

IF the disconnect switch does not work. or even if it does. I recommend that you LIFT the wire(s) off the NEGATIVE most battery terminal.. IF more than one wire tie them together so you don't miss any come spring.

Farmer Bob...You have the wrong idea about how the 'step switch' works. The switch WILL NOT stop the step from extending when the door opens. That will always happen. It even overrides the battery cutoff switch on many coaches (legal thing to minimize liability from people falling out of stairless coach). What the switch is for is to PREVENT the step from retracting every time the door shuts when you are set up at camp (save wear and tear on the step motor). It it's wired right, it will also get overridden and retract the step when you start the engine and the door is shut (so you don't drive off with the step out). Is the failure to disable the step the only reason you think the battery switch is bad? Until my latest Winnebago my older RVs have always killed the step with the battery cutoff switch. The Winne will extend the step ANY time the door opens, regardless of battery switch position (probably the industry standard now). The fire and propane detector also do not get cut off with the battery switch. If I didn't have a way to keep 110 to the coach when stored, I'd need to physically unhook the batteries to ensure they didn't get run down during a long sit. The magnet is your best bet. Lots of people do that.

On our '04 Winnebago I shut off the battery and go out the drivers door. The step switch works to keep the step open but not to keep the step closed. I didn't know it should.

ohm meter the switches seems unlikely two switches would fail at the same time
