  • When we drove down to Bushnell, FL this winter from near Broadalbin, NY, we also used the I-81/I-77/I-26, etc. route (via I-88 for us). We overnighted at Falling Waters, WV, Ft. Chiswell, VA, Jolly Acres, SC, and Jacksonville North KOA, GA before getting to Sumter Oaks RV Park in Bushnell. The first day getting to Falling Waters was a bit of a long run for us, but the rest were fairly short.

Planned trip using Rt #95 Miles are 1,274, and time is 22.3 Hrs.
Planned trip using Rt #81 Miles are 1,305, and time is 22.5 Hrs.

One avoids traffic and views through major Eastern cities using Rt #81, Rt# 77.
    Just my thinking.
    Hope it helps.

That's good thinking. 81 to 77 etc. is my route down.

Not sure if it fits in your timeline for a stop, but Falling Waters Campsite in Falling Waters, WV is one of our stops along the way down. Easy out if you leave early in the morning.

  • Candy Hill in Winchester Va is right off the interstate. Then you could stop at the KOA near Richmond. That is 2.5 hours. Then stop at south of the boarder. Easy on off and cheap too. Then you will need some one else. I stayed in the rest stop on the GA line then into FL the next day. I had snw so only got in 3 hours or so of driving per day till I hit GA.

  • we just went from poughkeepsie to naples--we left on a sunday(no hurry for time) and stayed overnight at cabelas in pa. took 78-81-17-66-95 you come out on 95 below wash and baltimore. we drive a little longer than you, we stayed overnight at south of the border and then at a rest area in ocala,fl. went straight through richmond on the way down but took the west loop around on the way back. it is a little longer than going 95 all the way but in actuality it is much quicker and a MUCH easier drive. there are several campgrounds we passed that i had never heard of so if you figure about where you want to stop and then use the next exit book you can probably find either a campground or a walmart to stop at. have a nice/safe trip

We stayed at Florence RV Park in South Carolina a couple times for an overnight while traveling. Within sight of highway. Recent reviews of it are not great, but might still be fine for overnight.
  • Lonny and Diane, tracing your route you go hundreds of mniles to the west...we would get off I 81 around Harrisburg and keep east..any particular reason you stay on I 81 so long?
  • Thakns Lonny and Diane, yes we like Fort Chswell, he do have a place in Tampa, any other suggestions en orute?
  • We usually stay on I-81 to I-77 and stop at Fort Chiswell RV Park in Max Meadows VA. Then I-77 to I-26 to I-95, then I-10 to US301, FL24, FL 331 over to I-75.
Another campground we like is Cross Winds in Linwood NC as an alternative to Fort Chiswell.
Do you have a place lined up in Tampa? We like Quail Run RV Resort in Wesley Chapel right off the interstate. They have some older shady spots in the back.
