Texas safety inspection

My safety inspection has expired and I am facing difficulties renewing. The MH is registered in Polk county with no emission test required. I am visiting the Dallas area in a couple of weeks on my way to Yuma. Dallas and surrounding areas require an emission test, which I would like to avoid. I received a warning ticket last April traveling through Texas. Has anyone faced this situation? Thanks.

and for what it is worth if your inspection is expired ANY STATE you pass through can give you a ticket for unsafe vehicle.

An expired NYS inspection does not violate any other state's laws. An expired sticker alone does make a vehicle unsafe.

When I had my class a DP, Texas state inspections were my biggest pet peeve. I never could find a place that would do the work.

The standard line was "we do not have an inspection bay capable of handling your 43 foot motorhome" I would always ask who does. I gave up after spending $$$$ on diesel running around every year trying to get an inspection and just went without.

I was seriously considering a Montana llc in order to combat this problem of useless state inspections.

Texas does not require the emission inspection on a DP. They have never even wanted to take mine inside. They do it sitting in the parking lot and only takes about 5 minutes; quick walk-around looking at the tires, check all lights (headlights, turn signals, lp light) and the horn is about it for a diesel.

OH, and dougrainer knows what he's talking about. In Dallas they will do the inspection required for your residence county, and does not have to comply to the more stringent Dallas emission requirements.

  • If you have been out of state, you have 5 days to get an inspection. So if you're going to be in the state less than 5 days if stopped they should give you a warning. Just keep a motel receipt or gas ticket that shows the last date you were out of state.

  • A couple of years ago we were in the Dallas area when the state inspection came due. The inspection station had me sign an affidavit stating I was not required to have an emissions inspection because my county of residence did not require one. The registration sticker shows the county where the vehicle is registered.
  • The Texas Inspection is done per where YOU have it registered. If you come to a Emission area, they do NOT do the Smog test, just the test that you are required to have in your county. So, you can go to any facility that can handle large vehicles. Doug
  • Curious why you got a warning ticket. Who gave it to you?
    Two options:
Pretend you forgot and they will not give you a ticket usually
or if they do it's not a moving violation on your driving record.
Get it done in a non-smog inspection city
