The signs must change

Most states have a law that states you must move over or slow for vehicles stopped on the side of the road. The signs need to include the words WHEN SAFE. I have nothing but respect for truck drivers but I cannot count the number of times they have pulled in front of me abruptly for what appears to be no reason. You eventually realize there is something stopped on the side of the road. Pull over for stopped vehicles when safe, not if a vehicle is in the process of overtaking you.
  • Most states have signs limiting your speed, direction of travel, where you can/cannot turn, etc..

But, as we've all seen, they apparently don't apply to everyone.

Adding more words to a traffic sign will have zero impact on safety.

When traveling on a public highway, you need to take care of #1 at all times. ;)
  • Well if you know the law well (which it sounds like you do) then you should know why they are pulling in front of you! In which case, as in anything when driving, be prepared to apply the brakes. In most all cases you can see out in front of the truck for quite a distance so you know what may happen. If there are flashing lights be prepared to let someone over to clear that side of the highway!

And that truck driver is going to change lanes when they 'think' they have an OPEN spot

    OR
when they realize that vehicle on side of road is stopped
(not paying attention to traffic.......phone/game boy/CB Radio/lighting a cigarette etc.)

  • There are always extenuating circumstances. No, I won't make an abrupt lane change to obey that law. I won't make radical speed changes either. Then again, I never speed.
  • Yep, our state says to either move over or slow down....so if it isn't safe to move over, I slow down.
