Thetford Aria Deluxe Overflowed on its own

So about a month ago my Thetford Aria Deluxe flapper stopped working.(listed in a another post).
I have ordered a replacement.

This weekend wife and I got up were watching some TV when we hear the pump going on the toilet. I open the lid and the flush water is going into the bowl, and the bowl if full !!!!

And the pump is not stopping, the water is now pouring out on the floor !
Ran and got towels placed them on the floor around the toilet, ran outside and cut off the water supply, came back in and the overflow had stopped. Unplugged the power to toilet.

I called Thetford and asked if there was a recall and they said no.

This is a very bad situation, what if we were not in the RV, the whole RV would have been flooded.

There should be an automatic shut off of water built into the toilet that would prevent this from happening.

Your thoughts ?

    Some clarification is needed.

In most cases, the water pump is NOT IN the toilet.

Regardless, this is exactly why you should get in the habit of shutting the water pump OFF when everyone leaves the RV....any brand and model.

I recently had to replace the incoming water shutoff valve in my toilet because it wouldn't shut off completely; just the valve, NOT the whole toilet. About 1/4 the price.

And finally, assuming you have a gravity flow model with a big dump valve in the bottom......the quickest and best way to prevent an overflow would have been.......to flush it and then turn the water off.

Edit: One more thing: IF you were connected to "city water", there is no reason to leave the 12 V water pump ON. Several things about your story confuse me.
  • This is an all electric device

The permanent RV toilet, Aria Deluxe II, is a new classic in sculptured China! The aria deluxe II is a permanent RV toilet that has a One-touch Walk-Away electric flush! Fingertip convenience -- just press to flush and walk away! Pulsating flush provides superior wash down and quiet performance. Uses about half as much water per flush as other brands. Elongated full residential-size seat and bowl. High profile seat height is 17-1/2". Low profile seat height is 13-9/16".
  • I learned to take some actions and habits to alleviate flooding our motor home--(again). Did it once and we were in the coach, hooked up to city water, and did not know the water was overflowing the commode until DW waded into the bathroom. Now we never leave water on when we are gone AND we have a water alarm in the commode area so should any water leak a very loud alarm goes off. Battery powered Water dog alarms are avaliable at most ACE hardware storesfor $15 to $20. Probably best money you will ever spend. A friend who has experienced same says ;it is not "if" you get a water leak it is "when".

I kind of figured that based on the way the story was written.

Just goes to prove that newer isn't always better.

While I don't hook to "city" water very often, I will now be getting a $3 shutoff for the end of my hose so I can shut the water off when the RV is not occupied.......regardless of where the pressure is currently coming from.
