Thinking about being a snowbird...

Hey good folks,
My wife retired in June and with these frigid temps in Washington State lately we've been thinking of snow birding maybe next year. The house won't be a problem as my son or daughter can take care of the house while we're gone. What do snowbirds do? Saddle up in October and head south? Where are those little snowbird cities?

Any info or advice will be most appreciated.

~Thanks, John (stepdad)

  • There are a lot of snowbirds around the Laughlin Nevada(Spelling) area for the winter. Within a few miles you can be in Arizona or California.
There are lots of rv parks that cater to snowbirds. Vegas is only a couple hrs. away.
  • Whatever you do, don't even consider Tennessee. The winters are cold, summers are hot, mosquitoes are fierce, and a lot of the people are weird. There is nothing to see or do, and all the water tastes like the backside of a still. But do pass through, and leave money behind.
  • You can go to weather.com and put in any city, state. Poke around on the forecast pages and you will find a monthly forecast. Somewhere in there is a graph with average highs, lows, and record highs, lows for every month of the year, plus another graph with rainfall by month.

I would link to one but they move it around a little on the site. Just keep clicking around until you find it.
  • I was looking at a map and how about southern Nevada for snow birding? Las Vegas area? Just curious.
  • Keep all the good info coming, I really appreciate it. We have two grandkids in Wa St and two grandkids in Reno. I'm a firearms enthusiast so California in a no-no. Most likely we would be interested in Arizona.

this morning it was 40 degrees here, San Antonio it was 28.
  • We get tons of snowbirds in the southern Californian desert (Canadians, Oregonians, Washingtonians (?), etc.)

Mexico also gets their fair share Americans heading south.

    Safe travels,
    MM.

What else do you need to know? Point your rig south and drive. :B
