The BlueOx baseplate on our Saturn Vue loosened on our trip to Alaska this summer. It was installed per instructions, loctite red was used and I personally torqued the bolts to specs. On the way home, just South of the terminus of the Alaska highway, I noticed a unusual amount of noise from the rear. We stopped to unhook the toad for the night and the entire baseplate was loose and the bumper cover and headlights had been broken loose. I removed the fascia and found that one bolt on each side has sheared, and the other two had loosened. The bolts on the frame extensions were still secure, but had broken the extensions off of the frame. I replaced the lost bolts and tightened everything, but it shook loose twice more on the way home to Florida. I'm not sure if the problem was caused by the use of the "whiz-nuts" or if I got some weak bolts, or if the verticle movements during the frost heaves put too much strain on the system. I removed the baseplate, repaired the broken components and removed the car from "Toad" status. I don't blame Blue Ox, and just installed one on our new Jeep replacement toad, but you can bet I will figure a way to check the attachment bolts on a regular basis.
