Through the Middle

Been out west a couple of times, first time clockwise second time counter clockwise. This time through the middle, roughly I-64 to I-70. Looking for suggestions.
  • Cahokia Mounds State Park is in western Illinois near the Missouri border and just a few miles north of I64.

We visited there a few years back on the way west and really enjoyed it. There is an excellent visitor center there.

We usually use route 36 across MO and KS for a more relaxed drive than I70.
  • Mr. John,

I see that I-70 runs right through Abilene, KS, where Dwight D. Eisenhower has his Presidential museum (very interesting). If you like looking at houses/architecture, the Seelye Mansion is also in Abilene. There is also the Kansas Auto Racing Museum (I haven't toured yet, I'm a car nut).

If you are plan on staying in the Denver area, make your reservations NOW! We have never been able to stay in the city, always full when we pass through.

The Zion National Park in Utah is beautiful. The I-70 ends at the I-15. If you haven't ever been to Las Vegas, it's a must see!

Where out west did you want to end up?

    Safe travels,
    MM.
  • how far west on I-70? What type of things do you enjoy?
    1. Kentucky Horse Park Lexington KY. Nice campground (Google Kentucky Horse Park Campground. Suggest reservations. Museums, theme park, horseback riding.
    2. St Louis - Gateway Arch - Casino Queen RV Park -shuttle to casino and MetroLink train.
    3. Kansas City - National World War I Museum, Arabia Steamboat Museum. We stayed at the campground at Worlds of Fun, Oceans of Fun.
Instead of Kansas City if you haven't been, I would drop down to Oklahoma City and visit the Memorial there. We stay at Twin Fountains RV Park. Then to Amarillo. We like Oasis RV Park and take a drive to Palo Duro Canyon. You can also camp there if you like remote and no cell service. Then Albuquerque before you head north to Colorado Springs and Denver.
    4. Denver & Colorado Springs, Pike's Peak, Garden of the Gods, Red Rock Canyon, Estes Park. We stayed at the KOA in Fort Collins. There is so much to see and do in this area. Also Silverton CO take the train.
    5. Utah?
  • Depending on what you are interested in, Kansas City area is a worthwhile stop for a few days. There is a lot of history there. Not only the WW1 museum, & Steamboat Arabia, but Frank & Jesse James (they grew up just outside KC) Ft. Leavenworth, Harry Truman, Several other things/places. If interested you can PM me, and I can give you a list.
  • Definitely go to Amarillo and visit Palo Duro Canyon State Park
  • In Amarillo I would take a shoot at Big Texan.
Years ago could eat only 46 oz of steak in 1 HR, but that was fun regardless paying for it. Still leftovers make lunch for next 2 days.
