Haven't kept up in awhile, but thought that the time left would be prorated. We have two vehicles on my BD and two on DW's.
Used to be, there was sort of an impact fee on a first time new plate and suggest you contact the FL DMV for the latest particulars.
For an impact, we can't pour the concrete fast enough and FL will soon take over NY, as the country's 3d most populous state. At present, the flocks of snowbirds are endless... Population

While there are legal 'loopholes' that could save you some money, most often your vehicles should be registered in the State you claim as your RESIDENT State. Your resident state will be the one where you have a preponderance of your correspondence, such as bank accounts, voter registration, driver's license, etc. Home ownership is not one of the requirements. I own homes in several States, but none in South Dakota, of which I'm a resident.

I would be very careful of telling your insurance agent less than the truth with a wink....that wink could result in a claim denial later on.

If you are going to remain a resident of South Carolina, then get off your butt and go down to the motor vehicle department and the tax collector's office and do your research. Folks here on this and other forums, while meaning well, may not provide you with the correct information. Research and verify!

We were residents of California when I decided to retire. I did my research, bought my coach in Arizona, and saved a bundle by registering it in South Dakota. (9 3/4% vs 3%) In order for me to do that though, I had to transfer my residency to SD which I started in January with my scheduled retirement date of July 4th. I can sleep well at night knowing the California Tax man can never knock on my door....again, my advice to you, research and verify....Dennis

If you happen to own a home in FL and wish to claim homestead for a huge tax savings over the long haul, then you must claim your domicile for such, as well. They also require any car you bring into the state to be FL registered along with it. I used to have a FL car with insurance in another state and for whatever reason, an insurance company cannot deny claims at their discretion and the states make sure of that. They might however, be able to drop you and/or not renew your policy. Many own homes and have claimed domicile in FL, but spend little time here. FL does require, like most that you don't try and claim it in another state as well and this practice, will eventually get you into trouble.

If you are financing, like I presume many of us do, beware of financing companies. Many will not allow you to register in Florida. Last year, I was in the process of trading in my gasser for a DP, and received financial approval from Bank of America. When the dealer informed them that the vehicle would be titled in FL, they stated that they would not allow it. They would only allow registration in my home state of CT (2nd highest taxes in nation) I do have a physical address in FL and offered to show proof, but they declined and stood their ground. When asked for a reasonable explanation, the loan agent stated they did not want to be involved in illegal activity. I didn't realize it was illegal to own property in more than one state.

It's not illegal to own property in more than one state...it is, however, a felony in most states to commit tax fraud....just sayin....Dennis

I called and was told you have to have a Florida DL to register a car in FL.

Incorrect

In many cases, states are willing to do things that mean income for the state. In many cases, it's where the vehicle sits that trumps other things.
Years ago, we had a 34' "floating RV" :) It was never kept in Massachusetts waters, but the 2nd year of ownership, Mass Dept of Revenue sent me a tax bill for $7k. I had to prove the boat had not been in the state for more than 29 days. Over 29 days, you owe taxes. Ask John Kerry :) :) :)
