I got a Sony HDR-AS30V cam for Christmas. I found when comparing to the GoPro Black, the Sony had a much better contrast ratio, and much less motion blur. When GoPro sees something close to black, it just calls it black, and you loose all the detail. My kids call it the SoSo, even though it really is a decent camera.
I just took it on a trip Wednesday and actually caught a police officer loosing control of his car and wiping out in front of my van on black ice. The camera was not rolling when the officer first got loose, so I only caught the end of the wipe out. Fortunately he did not hit anything, except maybe tapped the concrete barrier as he stopped. I don't normally have it rolling, unless there is potential for something interesting. I discovered the black ice just before it happened, and I was more concerned about getting away from the pack and into an empty lane, so I did not have the camera on my mind until I was where I wanted to be in traffic. That was when the officer lost it.
As far as insurance, all you have to do is remove the suction cup and throw the camera into one of the cupboards. They would be hard pressed to know enough to even look for it, let alone finding a card with video on it.
