  • We did without a car for the first few weekend excursions. On our trip to Topeka from California we stopped for shopping before we set up camp. It worked just fine. When we got to Topeka for a weeklong dog show, we rented a car and used it pretty much every day. Our Prius couldn't be flat towed, and as long as I was working I didn't want a less efficient car.

Now retired, we traded the Prius for a Honda CRV, which is big enough for my dog agility equipment and crates. We were extremely glad we had it on our last trip to Eureka. Turning onto northbound 101, we were hit by a southbound car & trailer, shearing the front off our MH. It was towed to Eureka, and there it sits until the insurance company gives the go ahead for the body shop to fix it. We were able to transfer dogs, perishables, clothes, etc. into the toad and go on to Eureka. I really don't know what we would have done without it.
  • We don't tow but most of our travels have been local so the wife follows in her car. This may be several hours later depending on how long she wants to take to get ready. We have on some longer trips rented a car at our destination if we had plans to see some sites.

Overall I would say it is better to tow than not, especially if you have an emergency and need a car now.
  • for the first 18-years we did not tow a car. initially it was partly a financial situation...just couldn't afford to either buy a vehicle we *could* tow or outfit the car. we made do with the MH. it was a 26' class A and we simply did our shopping before stopping for the night. we drove it to tours, stores, malls, etc. and generally had no problems. but as the years went by it became more of a pain to break camp, unhook and then put everything away. we also, occasionally, rented a car but that soon became a PITA. we must've rented cars maybe half-a-dozen times and except for one occasion near Walt Disney World we had to go to town to pick up the car or if the rental company came to get us we had to then drive back into town to drop off the rep and to sign the papers. then the reverse was true when we turned the car in. PITA.

we bought a new 35' MH in 2000 and we still weren't towing. parking a 26' MH was one thing...parking a 35' was another. the parking itself wasn't any harder but the options were sometimes reduced. 3-years later, when we were shopping for a new car to replace a 13-yr old minivan, we decided that enough was enough...apparently it takes some people longer. ;) we chose a jeep wrangler becauswe, among other reasons, we could flat tow it with zero modifications and no speed/time/distance restrictions (i'm also a jeep nut). well...what a difference. it was soooo much nicer, easier and relaxing to have a toad with us.

having a toad allows us to be more spontaneous and it also serves as a life boat if need be. my wife can take off on a shopping trip while i'm taking a na...er, working hard back at the campsite. trust me...you're going to want to have a car with you. you won't regret it.
  • I would not be without my Toad, I consider it as a spare. If you have to depend on the MH to sight see and go shopping or any other activity, it will get OLD real fast. Plus the difference in fuel cost running around in the MH at 7 or 8 MPG compared to 20 or 25 in the toad is plenty. I have also had a breakdown in the MH in Sterling, CO and would have been without transportation for 5 days if I didn't have a Toad, and the tow truck did not even have room for my wife and me for transportation back to Denver. So I never go without my Toad.
  • Tow the truck.

  • This is one of those choices that is all about you. I personally could not survive without the toad. If you are the type of person who never leaves the RV park, then you don't need a toad. Or if you don't mind taking down camp, storing everything inside the motorhome, closing the slides, unhooking everything and going in the class A, then you don't need a toad either.
