What I do when hooking up my toad is right after hooking up to the RV, while the engine is running, put the trans in the appropriate gear (in my case 2nd) and the transfer case in neutral. I then release the clutch and if the engine is still running (doesn't stall from being in gear) I know it is set correctly for towing.
