Toad Suggestions

I am looking at my options for a replacement toad for flat towing. Currently I have a 2007 Chrysler Town & Country which I pull with a dolly. It is cost prohibitive for me to do what I need in the Chrysler...namely the required oil pump. I have looked for used ones but haven't located one. I understand that I will need tow bars/plate, brakes and perhaps a driveshaft disconnect. Also, the Chrysler is starting to rust more and quite fast! Not that it can't happen with something else....

I am interested in looking at toad options as follows:

1) Must seat 4 people comfortably and have cargo space
2) Don't want to have to do much or very little modifications
3) must weigh under 4000 pounds
4) Looking at late model vehicles (2000 ~ 2010 range)
5) Not stuck on type of vehicle so cars, trucks, suvs can all be considered.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

  • Jeep Liberty is extremely comfortable for 4 people and easy to get in & out. Tows easy, too. Have a Jeep gives you many fun options to sitesee in beautiful places. Nothing special to do to tow and automatic transmission is great.

Should I presume that all the recommendations would be standard transmissions? This is an area I will need education in. I can drive standard, no problem there just wondering if some automatics can just be put in neutral.

generally, jeeps with automatic teansmission and a manually selectable neutral position in the transfer case can be flat towed. regardless of make or model check the owners manual to be certain the vehicle can be flat towed and what the setup procedure is. be aware that some vehicles come with time, speed and/or distance restrictions. and lastly, the amount of weight you can safely tow will be the lesser of the following:

    - the gross combination weight rating of the MH minus the actual weight of the MH as it is loaded and configured for travel

    - the weight rating of your hitch

    - the weight rating of your tow bar

  • My 2 door Elantra is less then 3000 lb, our 2 bikes fit in the trunk with the back seats down and because it's a standard, nothing has to be done to pull it four down. Also it was cheap and it's God on gas.
  • We flat tow our 2010 Jeep Wrangler 4 door Rubicon (JKUR) and have done so for a few years now. No issues.
  • Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, 2 or 4 doors.
For me, it would have to be a Rubicon.
