Toilet Removal

The bowl has come loose from the base of the toilet in my motorhome. The bowl is porcelain and the base (with the flush valve) is plastic. Looks like I will have to remove the toilet and turn it over to see if it can be tightened. My question is of those that have had their toilet off is there a wax ring like the toilet in your house that I will need to replace or how is it sealed? Thanks Roy
  • Rubber ring. What brand? I think the easiest way is to shut off water, disconnect the hose to the bowl, remove the 2 screws that hold the bowl. Once the bowl is removed it is real easy to lift and maneuver the bottom pedestal and install new mounting.

Go to the manufacturer web site and locate the proper parts first. I had a difficult time finding an RV store that had the parts I needed. Locating the parts were more difficult than the repair. Once you have it apart you may just want to replace the bowl seal also. It was easier for me to locate the complete gasket kit.

If it is a rubber seal/o-ring can it be reused?

  • It depends what model you have. I have the dometic 511 and the bowl is also china and the base portion is plastic. Maybe we have the same type. You stated the bowl came loose from the base. Actually the base is secured to the floor and the bowl is held in place with a large screw type clamp similar to a radiator hose clamp and is secured to the base. If we have the same type it is a two piece toilet, a bowl and a base. I would suggest you google the model and look at the schematic for a detailed diagram. The bowl and base are two sections and if it is just a loose bowl just remove the plastic cover and tighten the clamp. It suggests certain inch lbs and I do not remember what they are. Over tightning will intefere with your toilet possibly not holding water in the bowl.

you remove that lower plastic shroud(2 piece) at the bottom and look to see if its bolted down. Most likely its a regular toilit flange and uses a wax seal. Some like mine are bolted down but slip over a collar with a oring seal. But I see yours is a 2014 so most likely a oring seal like mine
  • Depending on brand, there may be a stainless hose clamp holding it together. Pull off the plastic trim piece and tighten the clamp. Be careful as there is a torque spec for it, something like 25 inch pounds.
  • All the toilets I have removed. Had a rubber ring. For an RV.
You can get ring for that toilet T an RV supply. Purchase by brand.

Have never tried the rings from a home supply.
