Too Old?

I'm 82 and going strong. There wont be one age that will fit all situations.

I see you are from Holland MI. We have had a couple of school bus drivers who were in their 70s and passed the DOT physical each year. I was one of them and I know of one in the 80s who passes each year. My Dr. signed for me and I picked up his kids. My kids still don't object riding with me. In another month I will be 75.

I am 81 and own two motorcycles. When I can not ride them and feel unsafe on them, then I will wait another five years and take a look at my motorhome driving ability and safety. Rode one scoot 200 miles yesterday in the rain and had a ball.

One of my problems, however, is that Texas raised the speed limit on IH10W west of Kerrville from 75 to 80mph. Ya gotta keep an eye out for those red necks. lol

I have two friends who drove RV's until their mid 80's. It seems that many in good health will be able to drive until age 80 to 85.

But what is good health? Let me suggest a few guidelines.

1. Vision correctable to 20/20.
2. Normal color perception.
3. Normal depth perception.
4. Daily physical exercise.

Even with those parameters, I suggest that at age 80+ you may want to drive only during daylight. Night vision and depth perception decline at senior ages.

I'm 67 now and 5 years ago we bought a new-to-us 2002 DP that we thought should last us at least the next 10 years of wintering in Mexico. The next 5 seems like it should be fine. Another 10? Who known. Both my father and grandfather quit driving (voluntarily) at 81. Hope to do at least that well. A dear old friend of mine sold his camper van and quit driving just after passing his medical and drivers test at 96. He lived 8 more good years. That's my target. But I won't push it.

While it may be frustrating, if you can hold out till next year, its likely that the financial world will recover by then. Unless you are in some really volatile investments, I can't think that things will come back around.

If you cannot pass a DOT physical, you probably should not be driving.

I'm sorry to say that we have spent way too much time on the road now where we have seen people that refuse to hang up the keys. All I can say is your rights end where others begin. A person may have the right to drive, but the public has the right to be on the road with safe drivers also.

I'll be 70 this December and we both feel good so we'll go for awhile yet.. But you never know what tomorrow will bring.. Mike Mathews..
