Too tall

So this AM we were sitting here at the campground in FL. Actually DW was sitting, I was trying to get my morning nap on the couch.
I heard a sharp Whack and jumped up just in time to witness the second Whack. A fifth wheel leaving had decided to take a short cut through an empty site across from us. He got a bit close to a tree, but did not hit it. His A/C's got a low hanging branch. In defense of the camp ground that limb had been cut back to maybe 5-6 feet from the tree trunk. So 2 A/C's gone.
Just a reminder that these things are not only loong, and wiide, they are also taall.

  • Sorry to hear about there misfortune! Being a retired trucker that's one of many things that I watch out for! I'm also grateful for basement air.
  • Thanks for reminder. And doesn't always happen because your driving where you shouldn't. Last summer I scraped my awning on a tree branch on a city street and city law stated they had 12 foot clearance. Still mad.
  • Many years ago I was hired to repair a drive through overhead canopy of a dry cleaning business.

Guy in a MH drove under it. MH fit, his AC didn't.
Impact knocked the AC right through the roof and onto the floor of the MH.

Hmmmmmmmm And it was a borrowed MH too.

Yes haste makes waste, as does being oblivious to how tall you are...
  • Not to coin expressions or anything, but "haste makes waste" and "speed kills" come to mind.
  • I saw where a root lifted the edge of the road and a 5th wheel rolled over it and jammed the corner of the roof into a limb that had been cut off. So keep a eye out for anything like this.
  • Good idea Jack. Seems like things always happen to me when in a hurry.
Spilled coffee like that this morning.
  • Why do a lot of people have to be in a hurry? I never want to leave in a hurry, always wanting to stay a while longer. But when leaving I am always checking my surroundings for potential problems. JMO

He'll know better the next time!!!...:B
  • So...was the short-cut route all on the pad/roadway, or was he just cuttin' across the whole site?

I ask because it sounds to me like the CG had cut the branch back to where it wouldn't be a hazard to folks's rigs under ordinary circumstances.
  • Saw something similar year or so ago. A class A departed site next to me and even though his TV antenna was down a low branch at his site hooked under it and ripped it up and nearly off.
