Topping up Engine Oil ?

Ok checking my engine oil today, I needed to add 1/2 qt. The only way I could do this was by lifting the bed and topping it up via the filler cap ?

Then I have to close the bed, start the engine and recheck the oil level outside. Luckily I put the right amount in the first time. But is there any way you can top off the oil via the dip stick tube? Or a modification I can do to stop the laborious task of in and out and raising the bed?

I can top off the transmission via the dip stick. which is a lot easier.

My coach is a 1992 Gulf Stream DP with a 5.9 Cummins and the radiator transmission cooler are at the back so vision of the engine is restricted.

Appreciate any advise from others whom have over come the problem.

Thank you

  • Yaj, Thanks will look into getting a flex tube + Funnel, it will certainly help.
And I 'd rather it take a little time than have the bed fall on me.... or would that be classed as sleeping on the Job ??

Deereone, As stated its a DP = Diesel Pusher, and I disagree Oil level is important not only for lubrication but it is part of the cooling system. Plus the engine takes 19 quarts, that a mount is for a reason !!
  • I certainly wouldn't worry about a quart low on a 5 or 6 quart gas engine. I'm sure your oil capacity is well over that and no need to worry about it even down 2 quarts. That's the reason they have ok range on the dip stick. If it's down to the add oil point it's sure lower than 1/2 quart.
  • Our 5.9 has a gravity oil fill located on the front (rear, fan side) of engine gear case. It has a hose connection that goes to a fill tube that fills just above the dip stick tube. It is quite high in the rear engine bay which makes it hard to pour oil from a bottle, I have to use a flexible looong reach funnel in able to empty a oil bottle that way.
